The North East Literary Review is now open for submissions for our first issue which we plan to launch sometime in February 2017.

Our theme for the first issue is “everywhere has a North East” inspired by this clip from the adventures of the Ninth Doctor in Doctor Who.

That is not to say we are focused on science fiction, the NELR is open to all genres and to creative nonfiction.

We are based in the North East of England, a region with a strong identity based on language, industry, culture, and the creative arts and we are proud of that whether we’re migrants or natives to the area.

Your story could be inspired by or set in the North East of Germany, or maybe in Brazil just across the border from French Guiana. Maybe it’s about two people in North East London, or about a Geordie exile returning to his roots?

Your story might be entirely true – did something amazing happen to you in the North Eastern corner of Peru? Have you got a first hand account of a major Newcastle Vs Sunderland derby lost in the mists of time?

The sky is the limit, the choice is yours.

We are looking for strong story telling, and a satisfying tale.

Please check our submissions guidelines here and make sure you have adhered to them before you hit send.

You are welcome to submit more than one story but please send them in separate emails. We are happy to accept stories you are also submitting elsewhere – but please let us know in the email if that is the case, and obviously do let us know if it is accepted elsewhere first – especially if it’s a paying gig!

We are all volunteers and are doing this around our day jobs so please be patient – if you followed the submission guidelines then we will reply whether or not we decide to publish you.

If you share your writing with us you are joining a community of writers who will support and promote each other.

When you’re ready email us on:

A note on payment.

We are brand new and do not yet have any funding – this first issue will not make any money, and we will not be able to pay contributors. Our aim is to create a strong publication that can access funding to pay contributors a decent rate.

Contributors to our first issue will be put to the front of the queue for our first paying issue.

See this blog post for more.

Your rights

We ask for non exclusive single issue rights – you retain full ownership of your work – you can republish your story elsewhere whenever and however you like, and in return you give us permission to publish your story in a single issue of our review, that we will continue distributing for an undefined length of time. We will not republish your work anywhere else, without your permission. We will issue you with a short contract that sets out our and your mutual obligations and expectations prior to publication.

If you wish us to link to your website or Facebook page, or to use a pseudonym please let us know in your submission email.
